CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Carter drove his truck up the incline to Eli’s and pulled to a stop beside Jillian’s car. He was still tired, but not as tired as he’d been when he’d tumbled into bed after church. His mind was still a bit of a mess, though, but at least he had a better grip on his emotions.
Eli answered the door, giving him a wide smile. “Was wondering if you were going to make it.”
“I’m sorry,” Carter said as he stepped into the house. “I pushed the snooze on my alarm more than I should have.”
“Totally understandable.” Eli thumped him on the back. “Coming off a twenty-four shift must be brutal.”
“Especially this one as we had enough call-outs through the night that we didn’t get any real rest. I still wouldn’t trade this job though.”
“Well, come and grab some food. Thanks to Leah, we’ve got plenty.”
Carter wandered over to the food, his gaze searching the room as he walked. It wasn’t until his gaze met Jillian’s and he realized she’d been watching him that he knew she was who he’d been looking for. He gave her a quick smile then made his way to where the food was spread out on the island.
As he surveyed all the food, he wondered if anyone would mind if he just piled it all on one of the platters. He hadn’t eaten a decent meal since…well, the previous night when a couple of the guys at the station had made stew for them. It had been delicious, but he was ready for more than the bowl of cereal he’d had for breakfast, and the protein bar he’d had for lunch.
Once he’d filled a plate with as much food as he could manage, Carter turned to find an empty seat. Leah got up from where she’d been sitting next to Jillian and waved him over.
“I’m done already,” she said as she picked up her empty plate and glass.
Carter thanked her, then set his plate down and went to pour himself a drink from the selection of pop bottles that sat on a nearby table. He wasn’t a huge fan of pop, so he only poured half a glass then grabbed a water bottle.
“How’s life treating you?” Beau asked after Carter had bowed his head to say a silent prayer of thanks for his food. He was seated across the table with Sarah.
“Can’t complain,” Carter said with a nod. “How about you?”
“Making some progress with getting my business off the ground, so I’m pleased about that.”
“Your brother and sister around?” Carter asked, remembering the funny stories that Sarah and Beau had shared about Beau’s siblings’ adjustments to small-town life.
“Not this weekend,” Beau said. “They’ve headed off to New York for some sort of fundraising event they were invited to. I think they plan to spend the week there to be immersed in a big city once again.”
“Better them than me,” Carter replied. “I may have lived in big cities over the years, but I’m really a small-town boy at heart.
